In this country that we managed in less than half a century to wipe out most of our archtectural tradition, the monasteries are probably the only large scale projects with uninterrupted living historical continiuty that still survive.

Long-standing traditions, both in art and in architecture, have managed to reach us through this unique architectural complexes, enriched by the dynamism of a living organism. A sufficient number of monastic complexes can be characterized as outstanding architectural monuments. Unfortunately, on the other hand, we destroyed many of these building complexes, burying them under modern building materials and modern techniques. Certainy the result was the loss of their original appearance, and the most of the spirituality in which they were dressed as well.

On the two hundred pages of the book and through the one hundred and twenty colour photos, a brief presentation of the monasteries is attempted, hisstorically and archtecturally, as well as their most important elements, such as churches, fortifications, refectories, and other auxiliary buildings. The unique monastic polities of Mount Athos and Meteora are presented in a special part of the book, while the rest of the pages are dedicated to a geographical guide with the most important monasteries in Greece that managed to avoid the mutation and the aesthetics of the concrete and the peudo - traditional plaster.

Σε μία Ελλάδα που φροντίσαμε σε λιγότερο από μισό αιώνα να αφανίσουμε το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της αρχιτεκτονικής μας παράδοσης, τα μοναστήρια αποτελούν πιθανότατα τα μοναδικά έργα μεγάλης κλίμακας με απρόσκοπτη ζωντανή ιστορική συνέχεια που διασώθηκαν. Μακραίωνες παραδόσεις, τόσο στην τέχνη όσο και στην αρχιτεκτονική, κατάφεραν να φθάσουν ως τις μέρες μας αλώβητες μέσα από τα εννιαία αυτά αρχιτεκτονικά σύνολα, εμπλουτισμένες από εκείνη τη μοναδική δυναμική που έχει ένας ζωντανός οργανισμός. Δικαίως λοιπόν, ένας ικανός αριθμός μοναστηριακών συγκροτημάτων μπορούν να χαρακτηριστούν ως εξέχοντα αρχιτεκτονικά μνημεία. Δυστυχώς όμως, από την άλλη πλευρά καταστρέψαμε και πολλά από αυτά τα συγκροτήματα, αφού τα θάψαμε κάτω από σύγχρονα οικοδομικά υλικά και σύγχρονες πρακτικές με αποτέλεσμα να απωλέσουν την αυθεντική τους εμφάνιση, αλλά και μεγάλο μέρος από την πνευματικότητα με την οποία ήταν ενδεδυμένα.

Στις διακόσιες σελίδες του βιβλίου και μέσα από τις εκατόν είκοσι έγχρωμες φωτογραφίες επιχειρείται μία σύντομη παρουσίαση της μοναστηριακής εγκατάστασης, ιστορικά και αρχιτεκτονικά, καθώς και των σημαντικότερων στοιχείων αυτής, όπως οι ναοί, οι οχυρώσεις, οι τράπεζες και τα άλλα βοηθητικά κτίσματα. Παρουσιάζονται οι μοναδικές μοναστικές κοινότητες του Αγίου Όρους και των Μετεώρων, ενώ περιέχεται ένας γεωγραφικός οδηγός με τα σημαντικότερα μοναστήρια-μνημεία στον ελλαδικό χώρο που κατάφεραν να αποφύγουν τη μετάλλαξη και την αισθητική του οπλισμένου σκυροδέματος και του πεταχτού επιχρίσματος.

Lake Kerkini is one of the most important wetlands in Europe and in Greece, where 328 species of birds have been recorded. The book includes the history of the lake, the current state of the ecosystem, the ploblems that faces, as well as a primary study of the lakeside traditional architecture. Also in the book pages some of the most important monuments of the region such as the Byzantine churches of the city of Serres, the Besesteni (Ottoman covered market), the Orestis tower at the Byzantine citadel and the monastery of Timios Prodromos, following the type of Agion Oros (Holy Mountain) are presented. It contains 117 colour photos and a map of the area around the lake.

Η λίμνη Κερκίνη είναι ένας από τους σημαντικότερους υγροβιότοπους στην Ευρώπη και φυσικά στην Ελλάδα, όπου έχουν παρατηρηθεί πάνω από 300 (328) είδη πουλιών. Στο βιβλίο περιλαμβάνεται αναφορά στην ιστορία της λίμνης, στη σημερινή κατάσταση του οικοσυστήματος, στα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζει, στην ορνιθοπανίδα της λίμνης, καθώς και μία πρωτoγενή μελέτη για την παραλίμνια παραδοσιακή αρχιτεκτονική. Ακόμα παρουσιάζονται και μερικά από τα σημαντικότερα μνημεία της ευρύτερης περιοχής, όπως οι βυζαντινοί ναοί της πόλης των Σερρών, το Μπεζεστένι ( οθωμανική αγορά κλειστού τύπου ), ο πύργος του Ορέστη στη βυζαντινή ακρόπολη και η αθωνικού τύπου μονή του Τιμίου Προδρόμου. This is a study - photo album with 284 colour photos about the towers and the tower - houses of the Peloponnese, which are essentially a distinct unity in Greek traditional architecture. This architectural unity is closely linked to our history, part of the social status of the Peloponnese, as the tower - houses belonged to the most economically powerful people, either Greeks or Ottomans but also to some Thieves (Rebels). The unity is also closely linked to the special social character of Mani region during the period of Ottoman rule period in the rest of Greece, where the war - towers in south and the fortified building complexes in north define the local social status at any given time. Moreover, in Mani the towers were active fortresses for decades after the establishment of the Modern Greek State. On the other hand, fortified monasteries landmark the insecure periods that prevailed in countryside.

The book attempts to present all of these buildings, and at the same time, to explore their origin, design and influence, as well the architectural evolution that they followed over the years. Last, but not least, there are references to the owners, when they are known to us, as well as to their personality. The final and objective goal is an acquaintance with the Greek traditional architecture, which we undoubtedly have devalued.

The presentation begins with a chapter reffering to buildings from outside Peloponnese, even from Europe, to support and to complete the main subject. The texts, except the main one, are directly linked to the pictures, so as the book can be read part by part without tiring the reader. The study is written in Greek but an English summary of the main text is included, as well as notes in English under each picture.

Μία μελέτη - φωτογραφικό λεύκωμα με 284 έγχρωμες φωτογραφίες για τους πύργους και τα πυργόσπιτα της Πελοποννήσου, τα οποία αποτελούν ουσιαστικά, μία ξεχωριστή ενότητα στην ελληνική παραδοσιακή αρχιτεκτονική. Μία ενότητα στενά συνδεδεμένη με την ιστορία μας. Τόσο ως μέρος της κοινωνικής οργάνωσης του Μοριά, αφού πυργόσπιτα διέθεταν οι οικονομικά ισχυροί, είτε Έλληνες, είτε Οθωμανοί, αλλά και ορισμένοι Κλέφτες, όσο όμως και με τον ιδιαίτερο χαρακτήρα της Μάνης, κατά την περίοδο της Τουρκοκρατίας στον υπόλοιπο ελλαδικό χώρο, μα και αργότερα, όπου οι πολεμικοί πύργοι στο Νότο και τα κάστρα στο Βορρά, οριοθετούν την εκάστοτε στιγμή το τοπικό κοινωνικό κατεστημένο. Από την άλλη μεριά οι αμυντικοί μοναστηριακοί πύργοι υπογραμμίζουν τη γενική ανασφάλεια που επικρατεί στην ύπαιθρο. 

Στο βιβλίο επιχειρείται μία προσπάθεια παρουσίασης όσων από τα κτήρια αυτά σώζονται και παράλληλα διερεύνησης της καταγωγής τους, των προτύπων και της εξελικτικής πορείας που αυτά ακολούθησαν στο χρόνο. Τέλος δε, δεν παραλείπονται αναφορές στους κτήτορες όταν μας είναι γνωστοί, καθώς και στην προσωπικότητα αυτών. Με τελικό και αντικειμενικό στόχο μία γνωριμία με την παραδοσιακή μας αρχιτεκτονική, την οποία αναμφισβήτητα έχουμε σε μεγάλο βαθμό απαξιώσει. 

Η παρουσίαση ξεκινά με την παράθεση κτηρίων από τον εκτός Πελοποννήσου ελλαδικό χώρο, ακόμα και από τον ευρωπαϊκό, για να επικεντρωθεί στο κυρίως θέμα. Τα κείμενα, εκτός του αρχικού-βασικού, είναι άμεσα συνδεδεμένα με τις εικόνες, έτσι ώστε το βιβλίο να διαβάζεται εύκολα και σπονδυλωτά, χωρίς να κουράζει τον αναγνώστη. Περιλαμβάνει αγγλική περίληψη του βασικού κειμένου, καθώς και σημειώσεις στα αγγλικά κάτω από κάθε κειμενολεζάντα.
